CODE & ADEA
CODE - (Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators)

Drs. Larry Haisch and William Johnson
The Academy of Operative Dentistry and the Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators have much in common as one of the goals of AOD is to advance and improve the teaching of operative dentistry. As such it seems natural that the AOD web site have a link to the CODE web site as CODE does to the AOD.

C.O.D.E. is the Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators. The United States and Canada are divided into six regions and all dental schools are invited to be members and participate in C.O.D.E. meetings. The National Director of C.O.D.E. is appointed by the Executive Council of the Operative Dentistry Section of the American Dental Educators Association

Annually each region holds a meeting hosted by one of the region's dental schools. During these meetings the members meet to discuss topics of interest or concern to operative educators. The agenda includes a core of questions that the Advisory Committee and the National Director establish. After all of the regions have met, the responses to these questions are compiled and published in book form, the annual "Regional Reports". The Report is mailed to all member schools is also available for viewing on C.O.D.E.'s website: http://www.unmc.edu/code/codeframe.html

C.O.D.E. has an annual meeting of members present at the Academy of Operative Dentistry's annual meeting in Chicago, IL. Information regarding this meeting is also on the C.O.D.E. website.

Additional information regarding C.O.D.E. is available on the website. Dr. Larry Haisch, the National Director, may be contacted at: lhaisch@unmc.edu or 402-472-1290

Room location information for our meetings and program will be available when you register. Our Section program this year is entitled, "Rampant Caries: Current Trends in Diagnosis and Treatment". Dr. Poonam Jain, ADEA Operative Dentistry Section Chair-elect and Dr. Rick Pink, ADEA Operative Dentistry Section Chair have organized our program this year.

On behalf of the section, I would like to convey a sincere thanks to Dr. Rick Pink for serving our Section for three (3) years as our Secretary, Chair-elect, and this past year as our Chair. Rick has worked hard to obtain adequate time for our section in the Annual ADEA meeting schedule. He has also "gone the extra mile" in participating as a speaker as well as organizer for our Section Programs last year and this year. It is great that Rick would like to continue to serve the Section as Councilor. Our secretary, Dr. Jim Dower will be responsible for recording our meeting minutes this year in Seattle and will move on to the Chair-elect position and be responsible for our Section Program next year (2005) in Baltimore, MD.

I'm sure you'll all agree that Dr. Larry Haisch continues to do a wonderful job in his 6th year as the National Director of CODE. Please note in the CODE section that, in addition to the ADEA meeting CODE forum, there was also a CODE meeting at the Academy of Operative Dentistry Meeting in Chicago, IL this year held on Thursday, February 19th. We appreciate you Larry!

I am sorry to inform you that Dr. Mark Hagge (UOP), who was newly elected to serve us as a Member-at-Large, lost his battle with cancer in the fall of 2003. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues at the University of the Pacific and in ADEA.

I have appreciated the opportunity to serve for the past four (4) years as your Section Councilor. It has been especially gratifying to me to have had the chance to work together with friendly, highly motivated and exceptionally outstanding professionals! Our Section of Operative Dentistry should be proud that we have such talented dental educators among us! We need to continue to mentor and encourage the efforts of those who agree to serve in leadership roles representing Operative Dentistry. I challenge you to become involved as either a member at large or as an officer in our Section! Together we can work to make a difference! I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Seattle and facilitating a productive program and meeting on behalf of our Operative Dentistry Section!

Greetings and Happy New Year to all Operative Dentistry Section members on behalf of the members of the Executive Council. Membership in the Operative Section gives all of us the opportunity to work together towards the advancement of Operative Dentistry in dental education. The Executive Council is made up of dedicated members who believe in the Section's ability to effect change in the teaching and acceptance of Operative Dentistry through coordinated action of our Section.

Our Councilor, Dr. Henry St. Germain; Chair-Elect, Dr. Poonam Jain and National Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators (CODE) Director, Dr. Larry Haisch have been actively planning the Section's meeting and CODE responsibilities on behalf of our Section. I would like to take this opportunity to thank these dedicated members and extend our sincere appreciation for the superb job they have done.

Dr. Henry St. Germain continued his outstanding job as Councilor of the Operative Section during this past year. Due to his increased responsibility at Nebraska, Dr. St. Germain has been working with me to transition me into Councilor of the Section at the end of my current term. Thank you Henry for all that you have done and your tireless energy on behalf to the Section. Dr. St. Germain's efforts have benefited the Section in innumerable ways. The Executive Council and membership appreciate your excellent service to our organization and wish you the best of luck in your duties at University of Nebraska. Henry, we hope you realize that you will always hold a special membership position in the Section.

Dr. Poonam Jain has organized a timely Operative Section program for the annual ADEA meeting in Seattle, Washington. The program, entitled "Rampant Caries: Current Trends in Diagnosis and Treatment," is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9th from 9:30-11:00 AM in the Convention Center. Three speakers are scheduled for this program, Dr. Sandra Guzman (University of Iowa), Dr. Poonam Jain (Southern Illinois University), and Dr. Rick Pink (University of Detroit Mercy). Information will be presented on the current state of curriculum for this topic in North American dental schools, the presentation of a successful program in this area, and finally suggestions for setting up a program in your curriculum. A discussion period will be provided to explore the information presented during the program. Our annual business meeting will take place from 11:00-12:00 Noon, immediately following the program.

Dr. Larry Haisch continues to do an outstanding job as National Director of CODE and we appreciate his efforts. Under his leadership, CODE has revitalized as an organization that promotes interchange among Operative Dentistry educators and effects positive change on a national level in Operative Dental Education. He has continued to improve communication among the various schools and regions in CODE and has promoted increased membership and participation in Regional meetings. Dr. Haisch continues to encourage CODE's interaction with Regional board examiners towards improved clinical boards that better reflect current teaching in Operative Dentistry. Dr. Haisch maintains a CODE website, CODE Newsletter and has updated the CODE directory. His excellent organizational skills and consistent communication with members via e-mail is greatly appreciated.

The Executive Council would also like to thank the Academy of Operative Dentistry for their generous support, both financially and professionally. The interaction between our two organizations has enabled our Section to accomplish much more than we could by ourselves. Special thanks goes to Dr. Mike Cochran, Editor of Operative Dentistry, for ensuring that this journal is consistently ranked in the very top of scientific journals. Great job Dr. Cochran!

Finally, I would like to thank Dr. Deb Cobb for her efforts and excellent leadership as Past Chair, and for her commitment to Operative Dentistry Education over the years. It has been my privilege to work closely with Dr. Cobb over the last few years. She generously shares her experience and guidance with her colleagues and was always willing to help me accomplish and/or understand responsibilities of the Section business. I would personally like to thank Dr. Cobb for her continual support and assistance during my tenure on the Executive Council. She is truely one of the premier dental educators in the nation in addition to being a fine person. Thank you Deb!

It has been a privilege for me to serve as Secretary, Chair-elect and Chair of the Operative Section of ADEA over the past three years. Now, I look forward to assuming the position of Councilor for the Section and hope to be able to adequately serve the Section as those before me have set the bar so high. I encourage all of you to take an active part in our Operative Section. Your participation is essential to maintaining a strong and progressive organization that contributes to the value of Operative Dentistry as a discipline and as a viable part of the Dental School curriculum. Through the Operative Section of ADEA and the CODE organization we can continue to advance the role of Operative Dentistry in dental education and the dental profession.

I look forward to seeing as many members as possible at our Section Program in Seattle. I hope your New Year has been healthy, happy and prosperous for you. Warm regards to all, Rick.

As I move into the position of chair of the Operative Section, I would like to thank those that have inspired me and those I try to emulate. Drs. Tom Berry, John Reinhardt, Dick McCoy and Craig Passon have all been great sources of inspiration for me.

Dr. Henry St. Germain has served as the councilor for the Section and done an outstanding job. We know that as Chair of Restorative Dentistry at Nebraska, Henry has a very demanding job that places constraints on his time. In spite of that he has always been there for the Section and I would like to thank him for this.

Even as Henry finishes his term as councilor, he will continue to be called for advice several times in the upcoming years!! Thanks, for always replying and being there when called in desperate emergencies!

I would like to thank Dr. Rick Pink for his service to the section. Rick put together a very informative program on Calibration last year and has served very ably as the Chair. His dedication to the Section is evident from his willingness to serve as the Councilor for the coming years! I have enjoyed working with Dr. Pink and hope to continue this collaboration for many years to come! I would like to thank all the members of the section for their time and energy. The input of our members and our shared passion for Operative Dentistry is what keeps us going!! I look forward to our meeting in Seattle and hope to see many of you there!

With the warmest regards,

Dr. Poonam Jain

CODE News

Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators (CODE)

On February 27, 2003, CODE held a National/International informal meeting during the annual meeting of the Academy of Operative Dentistry in Chicago with a signed attendance of 56. Thank you to the Academy of Operative Dentistry for providing the time slot and space for the meeting. Additional thanks to Drs. Kevin Frazier, William Gray, and Poonam Jain for their assistance.

CODE has scheduled a meeting for Thursday, February 19, 2004 from 4:15 - 6:00 P.M., Chancellor Room, Fairmont Hotel, Chicago Illinois. I am happy to announce that Dr. Ivar Mjor will present a program entitled "Microleakage and Recurrent Caries" at the meeting with time for questions and discussion. Time will allow for other CODE business as well. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending the meeting of AOD and CODE.

CODE looks forward to the March 2004 meeting of ADEA in Seattle. If time permits, CODE will have a brief meeting, held in conjunction with the business meeting of the Operative Section scheduled for 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, March 9.

The members of CODE continue to spread the word about CODE and work to provide input to Licensure Boards on Restorative Dentistry in several ways - especially as Board members. All CODE Regions are to continue to encourage/invite members of the Licensure examining boards to attend the Fall Regional meetings. Do not forget to invite our colleagues in the Armed and Public Health Services to our meetings - both Regional and National.

Support of CODE by payment from the schools for annual dues is excellent, although not without follow-up efforts by the National office. The same can be said for the collection of the Fall Regional Reports.

The web site (http://netserv.unmc.edu/code/codeFrame/html) continues to be the location of "all you wish to know and then some" for CODE. The menu now contains a posting of current available positions . Please access this site and utilize for posting per the directions. Thanks to Dr. William Johnson (UNMC-COD) for continuing to be the webmaster and doing timely updates and enhancements. NOTE: Update your schools' directory via the active "Please help update" link in the main menu.

Effective January 1, 2004, CODE stands for Consortium of Operative Dentistry Educators. This change was approved by the attendees at the Fall 2003 Regional CODE meetings.

I would like to thank all the Directors and the meeting hosts (Drs. Edmond Hewlett, Gary Hildebrandt, Melvin Hirsh, Courtney Lamb, Richard Lichtenthal and Paul Blaser), the Operative Section of ADEA and, especially, the general membership for helping to make CODE what it is and what it accomplishes.
